Susan Vigi-Vigil

Susan works primarily in the Jemez mountains as a plein air painter. Her love for art began early in life. Since 1977, the mountains, mesas and canyons surrounding her Jemez home offer daily inspiration. After teaching art for 25 years and raising 3 adopted children with her husband, newly found freedom allowed Susan to paint professionally. She uses a limited primary color palette of oil paint to mix the endless variety of colors in nature. As one of the founding members of Jemez Fine Art Gallery, Susan helped fulfill a need for a local venue for the many artists in this area. Joining Plein Air Painters of New Mexico (PAPNM) and other organizations has provided opportunities for classes, workshops, and shows. Susan coordinated many paint-outs, was Co-chair of both PAPNM 2017 and 2019 Spring exhibits, and served on the 2018 Board of Directors of PAPNM as Events Coordinator. She continues to show and sell paintings, win awards, mentor, and teach all ages of aspiring painters in schools and art camps Plein Air painting is challenging because of the elements but Susan continually learns while developing her personal style. She says, “I paint in response to God’s amazing creation and that creative spirit which has always been within me. I hope that my paintings give the viewer a sense of awe and wonder for the beauty which surrounds us!”
